These days, the choices are endless when it comes to choosing a wedding photographer to capture your big day! Sometimes it can be very overwhelming to try to choose the best fit for you. Here are a few points to consider when choosing the best wedding photographer to capture this once in a lifetime event …
Your friend has an awesome camera and offered to photograph your wedding for free, do you really need to pay a professional? Something to keep in mind is that there are a lot of moving parts to a wedding, and a lot of different circumstances that could take place. Weather, lighting, and many other factors all have a major effect on how your photos will look. A professional with lots of experience will have the skills, equipment, and know how to compensate for any challenging situations that may arise. A friend with little experience and minimum equipment will likely not have the same knowledge to be able to give you the best possible images. I know that free or cheap are very tempting, but with all the effort and money you are spending to create an amazing event, don’t you think it would be worth the investment to hire a photographer that will without a doubt capture your day with amazing images to pass down through generations?

Be sure to ask questions! If the photographer you are looking at does not list their experience, credentials, or have a consistent portfolio on their website, ask for those things!! There are many “photographers” out there that just have an interest in photography and just start taking jobs without taking the proper steps to become a legitimate business. There are also some that are scammers. Are they registered with the state as a legit business? How long have they been doing photography? Have they and do they continue to invest in their education to better their skills? Do they have insurance? These are just a few things that are super important to being a professional photographer. These things will protect both you as a consumer and them as a business owner.
Make sure you love their style! Take a good look at their portfolio so you know exactly what to expect. It never hurts to even ask to see full galleries aside from the best images on their website. Some photographers have a light & airy style, some have dark and moody, and some are everything in between. Know what you are getting into.
Not only style, but make sure you click with your photographer’s personality! Meet them in person or at the very least via a video call before you actually hire them. It would be the WORST if they show up on your wedding day and your personalities just clash. Remember, you will be spending a good amount of your day with this person… make sure they are someone who can put you at ease and that you can have fun with, not someone who will stress you out. Also, make sure they understand and care about what is important to YOU, not just their portfolio. This is YOUR day and it should be all about you and your story.
